Hungarian - Serbian border crossing

BorderWatcher Röszke 1

Röszke 1 -> Horgos 1 highway (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short:  R1 -> H1
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 0-24
  • Travel: Coming from Budapest, it is worth stopping at the M5 Szatymaz MOL station to decide which way to go next. After that, you can turn towards Tompa, Ásotthalom, the Röszke small border, or Tiszasziget as well
  • Camera: There is one, but only at the Serbian gate, so it may appear that the border is empty, but there is a several-hour wait at the Hungarian gate.
    In such cases, check the reports and map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a longer wait
  • Alternatives: Röszke 2, Ásotthalom, Tiszasziget, Kübekháza
  • Tips: It can generally be stated that Röszke should be avoided during the summer holidays, as this is when travelers with eastern roots working in Western Europe cross here.
    It is hard to say "Turks" anymore, because many are now European citizens, like Hungarians, having spent so much time in Europe. What to avoid is weekends and especially nights, as it hardly moves then.
    During the day, more gates are usually open during peak hours (10-12), so although there are many people, it can still move. Sometimes, truck drivers block the road for various reasons. The shift change usually occurs around 7 and 19 hours, so the waiting time may increase during those times.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the intermediate zone between the two gates is full, it takes 45 minutes - 2 hours
    2. If it is not full, only at the Hungarian gate's trucks weighing area, 15-45 minutes
    3. If the queue ends between the Hungarian gate and the gas station (700m), 1-2 hours
    4. If the queue ends at the gas station (1.3km), 1-3 hours
    5. If the queue ends beyond the highway exit (2km+), avoid it, 3-6 hours
  • BorderWatcher Horgos 1

    Horgos 1 -> Röszke 1 highway (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: H1 -> R1
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 0-24
  • Travel: At Subotica, it is worth stopping at the Palić exit, perhaps to visit Lake Palić, and decide then which way to go next. After that, you can turn towards Backi Vinogradi or Horgos 2
  • Camera: There is one, but only at the Serbian gate, so it may appear that the border is empty, but there is a several-hour wait at the Hungarian gate.
    On the camera showing the Serbian gate from the Hungarian side, it can be seen on the right if the area between the two borders is full.
    In such cases, check the reports and map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a longer wait
  • Alternatives: Horgos 2, Backi Vinogradi, Dala, Rabe
  • Tips: It can generally be stated that Horgos should be avoided during the summer holidays, as this is when travelers with eastern roots working in Western Europe return.
    1. If the border vicinity is full, it takes 1 - 2 hours
    2. If it is not full, only up to the WC at the Serbian gate, 15-45 minutes
    3. If the queue ends at the gas station (1.5km), 3-6 hours
    4. If the queue ends beyond the highway exit (2.5km+), avoid it, 6+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Röszke 2

    Röszke 2 -> Horgos 2 (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: R2 -> H2
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 5-23 (but sometimes 0-24 during summer peak times, this is always shown in the app)
  • Travel: At the last exit of the M5, but before that, check the map to see how far the queue extends. Sometimes it's so long that taking the exit is just a waste of time
  • Camera: None, but you can upload a photo or video to your post in the app
  • Alternatives: Röszke 1, Ásotthalom, Tiszasziget, Kübekháza
  • Tips:  The Röszke small border runs parallel to the highway.
    If the highway is clogged... so will this be. The downside is that it NEVER, well 1-2 times it has, but rather NEVER has more than one lane, so its throughput is much slower than the highway.
    Additionally, there is pedestrian traffic here, which further slows down the passage of cars.
    If there are too many people, it's not uncommon for the police to close the road at the roundabout and direct travelers to another border crossing.
    However, it is worth reporting this in the app because if the queue clears, you can quickly cross (last year I managed to cross in 5-10 minutes this way)
    On the map in the app, it is usually clear where the end of the queue is, so even if there is no post, you can know how long the wait will be.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the queue ends at the bus stop 40-80 minutes
    2. If the queue ends at the bend (600m) 90-120 minutes
    3. If the queue ends halfway between the roundabout and the border (1km) 2-4 hours
    4. If the queue ends at the roundabout (1.8km) 4-6 hours
  • BorderWatcher Horgos 2

    Horgos 2 -> Röszke 2 (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: H2 -> R2
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 5-23 (but sometimes 0-24 during summer peak times, this is always shown in the app)
  • Travel: At the last exit of the A1 Highway, but before that, check the map to see how far the queue extends. Sometimes it's so long that taking the exit is just a waste of time
  • Camera: None, but you can upload a photo or video to your post in the app
  • Alternatives: Horgos 1, Backi Vinogradi, Dala, Rabe
  • Tips:  Towards Hungary, Horgos 2 is highly not recommended.
    In my experience, it's the slowest crossing of all. Even with only 10 cars, it can take an hour.
    It's worth choosing the no-time posting option in the app with a photo or text message about the pace.
    If the highway is clogged... so will this be. The downside is that it NEVER, well 1-2 times it has, but rather NEVER has more than one lane, so its throughput is much slower than the highway.
    Additionally, there is pedestrian traffic here, which further slows down the passage of cars.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the queue ends at the gate 40-80 minutes
    2. If the queue ends at the outer parking lot (400m) 2-3 hours
    3. If the queue extends beyond the outer parking lot (600m) 3-5 hours
    4. If the queue ends at the village (1.5km) 5-6+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Ásotthalom

    Ásotthalom -> Backi Vinogradi / Királyhalom (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: Á -> BV
  • Who can cross: Citizens of Serbia + EU, EEA, Switzerland, and their third-country family members enjoying the EU's free movement rights
  • Opening hours: 7-19 (but sometimes 7-22 from Friday to Sunday during summer peak times, this is always shown in the app)
  • Travel: Exit the M5 highway at Domaszék onto road 55. The road is slightly winding after Mórahalom, but it is passable.
  • Camera: None, but you can upload a photo or video to your post in the app.
  • Alternatives: Röszke 1-2, Tompa
  • Tips:  Personally, I really like the Ásotthalom border crossing (as much as one can like a border crossing), mostly traveling that way from Szeged because it is relatively fast, often working in two lanes, although it takes some luck to catch that, then even a larger queue can go down quickly.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the queue ends at the gate 10-30 minutes
    2. If the queue ends at the monument (Turul) (400m) 45-60 minutes
    3. If the queue ends between the access road and the border (800m) 1-2 hours
    4. If the queue ends at the access road (1.2km) 2-4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Backi Vinogradi

    Backi Vinogradi / Királyhalom -> Ásotthalom (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: BV -> Á
  • Travel: Exit the A1 highway at the Palic exit towards Hajdujárás, then take the good road for about 7km to the border.
  • Camera: None, but you can upload a photo or video to your post in the app.
  • Alternatives: Horgos 1-2, Kelebija
  • Tips:  Towards Hungary, the picture is a bit more shaded. Here, 2+ hour waits are more frequent, but a positive is that local vendors with fresh, delicious fruits and other goods make the wait easier. If the queue ends in the village, run!!
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the queue ends at the gate 20-40 minutes
    2. If the queue ends at the forest line (300m) 40-80 minutes
    3. If the queue ends at the last houses (800m) 1.5-3 hours
    4. If the queue ends at the access road (1.8km) 4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Tompa

    Tompa -> Kelebija (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: T -> K
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 0-24
  • Travel: On Route 55 between Szeged and Baja, be cautious of crossing animals at night
  • Camera: There is one, but only at the Serbian gate, so it might appear empty while there are hours of waiting at the Hungarian gate.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Bácsalmás, Ásotthalom
  • Tips:  The other 'major' crossing among the three international Hungarian-Serbian borders.
    Tompa can be an excellent alternative if Röszke is 'down'. Generally a quiet crossing with minimal traffic..
    However, due to the app's spread, more people have discovered it, so during peak times, a 3-6 hour wait can develop here as well.
    The good news is that, according to feedback, the officials here work the fastest and best (kudos to them), so they manage multiple lines, sometimes cutting from the other direction, making what initially seems like a long wait more bearable.
    If the traffic is very heavy, the authorities usually stop the traffic after the roundabout, causing long lines on the Tompa bypass as well.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the border is crowded, 30-40 minutes
    2. If the queue ends at the border discount (300m) 30-60 minutes
    3. If the queue ends between the roundabout and the border (1km) 1.5-2 hours
    4. If the queue ends at the roundabout (2km) 2-4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Kelebia

    Kelebija -> Tompa (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: K -> T
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 0-24
  • Travel: The Subotica bypass was built 1-2 years ago, allowing direct access from the A1 highway on a very good road to the border crossing.
  • Camera: There is one, but only at the Serbian gate, so it might appear empty while there are hours of waiting at the Hungarian gate.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Bajmok, Backi Vinogradi
  • Tips:  Towards Hungary, similar to Backi Vinogradi, the line tends to move slower for some reason. It's not uncommon for the border area to be full, but usually, multiple lines are in operation here as well.
    Trucks often park along the road from Kelebija, feel free to bypass them if possible.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the border area is full, 40-80 minutes
    2. If the queue ends between the roundabout and the border (400m) 1-2 hours
    3. If the queue ends after the roundabout (1km) 2-4+ hours
    4. If the queue ends after the roundabout (2km) 4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Tiszasziget

    Tiszasziget -> Dala / Gyála (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: TSz -> GY
  • Who can cross: Serbia + EU, EEA, Swiss citizens, and their third-country family members enjoying the right of free movement under EU law
  • Opening hours: 7-19 (strictly, no overtime here :) )
  • Travel: The route from Szeged to Tiszasziget goes almost entirely through populated areas, so a speed limit of 50km/h applies, but you can also come from Makó
  • Camera: There is one, but only at the Serbian gate, so it might appear empty while there are hours of waiting at the Hungarian gate.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Kübekháza, Röszke 1,2
  • Tips:  The Tiszasziget border crossing is not among the busiest, which is why many prefer it, especially recommended for those traveling from Eastern Hungary.
    In case of a larger crowd, multiple lines operate, relatively quick compared to others. Of course, if there's a siege everywhere, this is no exception.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the border area is full, 20-40 minutes
    2. If the queue ends at the end of the forest line (200m) 30-60 minutes
    3. 800 meters from the border the queue end is 1-2 hours
    4. 1.5km from the border the queue end is 2-4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Gyála

    Dala / Gyála -> Tiszasziget (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: GY -> TSz
  • Who can cross: Serbia + EU, EEA, Swiss citizens, and their third-country family members enjoying the right of free movement under EU law
  • Opening hours: 7-19 (strictly, no overtime here :) )
  • Travel: It's a bit tricky; it's best to cross the Tisza at Zenta or Törökkanizsa, as you can travel on lower-category roads until then.
    Frequent police checks.
  • Camera: There is one, but only at the Serbian gate, so it might appear empty while there are hours of waiting at the Hungarian gate.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Rabe, Horgos 1,2
  • Tips:  The queue generally moves quite well towards Hungary, although 1-2 hour waits can occur, as many use this route to avoid longer waits elsewhere.
    Border guards might be a bit strict when inspecting cars.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. If the border area is full, 20-40 minutes
    2. If the queue ends at the end of the slope (200m) 40-60 minutes
    3. If the queue ends at the church (400m and an amen) 1-2 hours
    4. If the queue ends outside the village (1.5km) 2-4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Kübekháza

    Kübekháza -> Rábé (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: K -> R
  • Who can cross: Serbia + EU, EEA, Swiss citizens, and their third-country family members enjoying the right of free movement under EU law
  • Opening hours: 7-19 (strictly, no overtime here :) )
  • Travel: From Szeged, just like to Tiszasziget, you need to go through Szőreg, then turn off at the Kübekháza sign.
  • Camera: There isn't one, but you can upload pictures or videos to your post in the app.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Tiszasziget
  • Tips:  The easternmost and newest Hungarian-Serbian border crossing, not far from Tiszasziget.
    Usually, there is no traffic, but everything said about Tiszasziget applies here, especially recommended for those traveling from Eastern Hungary.
    What's different is that the border crossing here is a bit slower; there is often only one line, so during busy periods, crossings can get congested.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. 200 meters from the border, 30-60 minutes
    2. 1 km from the border, 2-4 hours
    3. If the queue ends at the end of the village (2 km) 4-6 hours
  • BorderWatcher Rábé

    Rábé -> Kübekháza (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: R -> K
  • Who can cross: Serbia + EU, EEA, Swiss citizens, and their third-country family members enjoying the right of free movement under EU law
  • Opening hours: 7-19 (strictly, no overtime here :) )
  • Travel: Same as towards Gyála, you can cross the Tisza either at Törökkanizsa or Zenta and take secondary roads to the border crossing.
  • Camera: There isn't one, but you can upload pictures or videos to your post in the app.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Dala
  • Tips:  Crossing into Hungary is very slow for some reason; even 5-6 cars can hold up for half an hour, so 2-3 hour waits are not uncommon here, especially since many use this route to avoid longer waits. Generally, those who see the long queue at Gyála try this border crossing too, but if there is the same crowd here as at Gyála, then Gyála is a better choice.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. 300 meters from the border, 30-60 minutes
    2. 1 km from the border, 2-4 hours
    3. If the queue ends at the end of the village (1.5 km) 4-6 hours
  • BorderWatcher Bácsalmás

    Bácsalmás -> Bajmok (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: BA -> Bajmok
  • Who can cross: Serbia + EU, EEA, Swiss citizens, and their third-country family members enjoying the right of free movement under EU law
  • Opening hours: 7-19 (but it happens that during summer peak hours from Friday to Sunday 7-24, this is always visible in the app)
  • Travel: For those traveling from the western part of Hungary, it can be a good alternative; you need to turn off at Mélykút or Tataháza on the 55 road.
  • Camera: There isn't one, but you can upload pictures or videos to your post in the app.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Tompa, Bácsszentgyörgy
  • Tips:  A pretty good, quiet small border crossing between Tompa and Hercegszántó, which can be reached from the 55 road. There is generally no traffic, but the same applies as for Tiszasziget; in case of heavy traffic, multiple lanes operate, but there may be 1-2 hours of waiting. Recommended if Tompa gets congested, and during summer break from Friday to Sunday, it's usually open until midnight, which few people know... ;)
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. 300 meters from the border, 30-60 minutes
    2. 1 km from the border, 1-2 hours
    3. 2 km from the border, 2-4 hours
    4. 3 km from the border, 4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Bajmok

    Bajmok -> Bácsalmás (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: Bajmok -> BA
  • Who can cross: Serbia + EU, EEA, Swiss citizens, and their third-country family members enjoying the right of free movement under EU law
  • Opening hours: 7-19 (but it happens that during summer peak hours from Friday to Sunday 7-24, this is always visible in the app)
  • Travel: You need to exit the A1 motorway at Topolya and take lower-level roads towards Bajmok.
  • Camera: There isn't one, but you can upload pictures or videos to your post in the app.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Kelebija, Rastina
  • Tips:  Crossing towards Hungary is slower, so here 2-3 hour waits are not uncommon during peak hours, considering that many use this route to avoid longer waits.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. 300 meters from the border, 30-60 minutes
    2. 1 km from the border, 1-2 hours
    3. 2 km from the border, 2-4 hours
    4. 3 km from the border, 4+ hours
    5. 4 km from the border, 6+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Hercegszántó

    Hercegszántó -> Backi Breg (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: HSZ -> BB
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, so basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 0-24
  • Travel: From Budapest, take the M6 motorway towards Baja and Hercegszántó.
  • Camera: There isn't one, but you can upload pictures or videos to your post in the app.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Bácsszentgyörgy, Bácsalmás
  • Tips:  The last 'big' border among the three international Hungarian-Serbian borders, and also the westernmost.
    If Tompa is an excellent alternative, then this applies to Hercegszántó as well, especially for travelers coming from the west, but you can also reach it from Budapest via the M6 motorway in good time. There is rarely significant waiting, especially when it's busy everywhere else, but in that case, 2-3 hours is not uncommon.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. 500 meters from the border, 30-60 minutes
    2. End of the village (1 km), 1-2 hours
    3. In the village (2 km), 2-4 hours
    4. Beyond the village (3 km), 4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Backi Breg

    Backi Breg -> Hercegszántó (Serbia -> Hungary)

  • In short: BB -> HSZ
  • Who can cross: International passenger and freight traffic, so basically everyone
  • Opening hours: 0-24
  • Travel: Take the A1 motorway towards Hungary, then exit at Vrbas and proceed towards Sombor and Baja on roads of not very good quality.
  • Camera: There isn't one, but you can upload pictures or videos to your post in the app.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Bácsszentgyörgy, Bácsalmás
  • Tips:  Traffic tends to move slower towards Hungary, and here, 3-5 hours is not uncommon.
  • In the attached image, you can see the AVERAGE time (average because everyone has experienced more and less, of course) to cross from where the indicator is marked, without a system crash.
    1. 200 meters from the border, 30-60 minutes
    2. End of the village (700 meters), 1-2 hours
    3. In the village (2 km), 2-4 hours
    4. Beyond the village (3 km), 4+ hours
  • BorderWatcher Bácsszentgyörgy

    Bácsszentgyörgy -> Rastina (Hungary -> Serbia)

  • In short: BSZGY -> R
  • Who can cross: Serbia + EU, EEA, Swiss citizens, and family members of third-country nationals who enjoy the free movement rights of these
  • Opening hours: 7-19
  • Travel: From Baja or Csávoly, head towards Gara and then towards the border.
  • Camera: There isn't one, but you can upload pictures or videos to your post in the app.
    In such cases, check the reports and the map in the BorderWatcher app to see if there is a significant wait.
  • Alternatives: Hercegszántó, Bácsalmás
  • Tips:  Bácsszentgyörgy is the least used border crossing, very few people go through, so I don't have much information.
    There are a few occasions during the year when there are queues here for several hours, typically when there are long waits everywhere else.
